Russian Hackers Penetrate Democratic Party Network; DNC Chair’s Comments Show She Has Much to Learn

WASHINGTON, D.C. June 14 (DPI) — Hackers affiliated with the Russian government broke into the computer network of the Democratic National Committee recently, according to The Washington Post, and while reader comments mused about the amount of intelligence that might be retrieved, a quote by DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz struck many as especially uninformed about network security.

She told The Post that the DNC and its contractor moved as quickly as possible to “kick out” the intruders – an almost meaningless phrase once a network has been compromised, say security experts.

According to network security experts, once those intent on accessing a secure network do so, the network is no longer secure, and all data on that network – on local drives and servers alike – are available for the intruders to collect. “Kicking out” an intruder means a system administrator must disable the entire network – and kick out every user. To ensure new security after any breach, administrators must create a second network with new security protocols and authentication.   Even then, there is no certainty that skilled hackers can’t be kept out of the second network, experts say.

According to The Wall Street Journal:

The Democratic National Committee’s computer systems were breached by hackers linked to the Russian government, party officials said Tuesday.

The Washington Post, which earlier reported the news, said that the party’s entire file of opposition research against Republican candidate Donald Trump had been taken.

“When we discovered the intrusion, we treated this like the serious incident it is and reached out to [security firm] CrowdStrike immediately. Our team moved as quickly as possible to kick out the intruders and secure our network,” said DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
