Trump, Sanders Tap Same Discontent, But Political Class Still Takes Neither Seriously

WASHINGTON, D.C. Feb 10 (DPI) – Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders handily won the New Hampshire primary yesterday, but political operatives in both parties – along with the mainstream media – still seem to regard their candidacies as storms that will blow over before the summer conventions. Both Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush treated their losses last night as political victories as the candidates head south for more primaries and Super Tuesday March 1 – and where voters are viewed as less independent minded.

So far, one narrative is that the Iowa and New Hampshire results are anomalies that won’t reflect the outcome of November’s election.  The Washington political establishment appears convinced that chronic disaffection among voters can be overcome with advertising, both on the local level during later primaries, and in the national election. After all, Washington insiders reason, as long as benefits – Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, and special tax favors – continue to be doled out, the political status quo is unlikely to be seriously threatened, and polished advertising should calm them down.

Still, The NYT and other outlets haven’t reported much on a possible third-party bid by former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg, which could dramatically impact the November election.
