Assault on High School Football Ref Sets Off Storm – Away from Major Media Sites

NEW YORK, NY Sept. 8 (DPI) – Sites like Youtube and Facebook spread the news about a disturbing and rare on-field assault in which a referee got blindsided by two players during a Texas high school football game.  Video of the incident received more than seven million views on Youtube over the weekend, and Facebook distributed multiple links, ensuring widespread awareness of the incident as well.

But curiously both The New York Times or The Washington Post had nothing on their sites about the incident today.  The attack was especially newsworthy because the two players involved are likely to face criminal assault charges. And the outcry from sports organizations throughout the country has been swift and strong.

The incident in San Antonio, TX, had some racial overtones since the players accused in the attack claimed the referee had made racist comments, claims of which at this point couldn’t be verified. Nevertheless, video footage of the two players spearing the referee was dramatic and damning. Comment boards across the internet almost universally condemned the teen-age players, Michael Moreno and Victor Rojas, who were immediately suspended from the team and from attending school.

The LA Times, though, reported on the aftermath on the incident, while other metro sites did as well, including the sites of the San Antonio Express-News:

CBS News followed up with the claim that a racist comment by the referee motivated the players to assault him – but many of the linked comments called that claim no justification for an assault:
