Media Descended on Arlington Law Firm After High-Profile Attack on Managing Partner

ARLINGTON, VA  May 12 (DPI) – In the days after the November 2014 home-invasion attack on its managing partner, Arlington-based Bean Kinney & Korman had to fend off dozens of reporters who went to surprising lengths to get access to the firm, senior lawyers at the firm said last week.

As the alleged perpetrators of the vicious attack on Leo Fisher and his wife face a hearing today in Fairfax, many of Bean Kinney’s 100-plus lawyers are now being reminded of the Nov. 9 incident, which left both Fisher and his wife, Susan Duncan, with severe injuries.  Fisher and his wife have been unable to return to work and have been unable to resume normal lives, colleagues said last month.

According to senior lawyers at the firm, reporters and other “information gatherers” descended on the firms’s seventh-floor lobby in the days that followed, some identifying themselves as “consultants” or “friends of friends” of specific lawyers. The parade of inquiries created a “vulgar circus atmosphere” for the firm, which had to hire a security detail and close off its lobby to the public.  “The level of insensitivity (from the media) just added to the shock. It was just surreal,” said one senior partner.

The alleged perpetrators, Andrew Schmuhl and Alecia Schmuhl, were arrested hours after the evening incident Nov. 9. Alecia Schmuhl, herself a lawyer, had been terminated by the firm only weeks earlier.  Both were denied bail and remained in jail since their arrest, and they face an array of charges.

Alecia Schmuhl worked for two years as an associate at Bean Kinney as a business lawyer. Her profile on NoVa Women’s Network, still live, includes a personal response to “What is the best referral networking advice you would give someone? She replies: “Always Make Yourself Memorable.”
