NYT: As Internet Telephone Services Expand, So Does Fraud

WASHINGTON, D.C. Oct. 20 (DPI) – The New York Times today published a cautionary report on the growth of fraud in internet telephone services, a ballooning problem as more and more small businesses and professional firms adapt internet-based telephone plans.

According to the report, offshore fraud operations are hacking into internet-based phone systems of small businesses and using the telephone lines to host pay-per-call 900 numbers, with the fraudsters collecting the money and the small businesses getting the bill for it.

According to The Times, such fraud amounted to more than $4.7 billion in losses globally last year, up from about $1 billion only two years earlier.
