Many Ask “Why Was Commercial Airliner Over a War Zone?”

WASHINGTON, D.C. July 18 (DPI) — Amid the reflex of shock and grief over the downing of a commercial airliner over Eastern Ukraine yesterday, many readers posed a valid question: What was Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 doing flying over a war zone where other planes had been recently shot down?

The answer, according to comments and tweets from flightradar24.com, is that other commercial flights had been in the airspace as well, and for weeks, all suggesting that altitudes above 30,000 feet were considered by some airlines – including Thai Airways and Malaysia Airlines – to be safe.

Notable though that many western airlines – including United and British Airways – had been avoiding the airspace in the previous weeks.

Now, of course, no commercial airliners are in airspace in Eastern Ukraine:

More than 1400 posters commented on the incident on nytimes.com following its main news story yesterday. And while a large percentage of posters blamed – if indirectly – Russian President Vladimir Putin for the tragedy, many readers focused on the question of how a commercial airliner would risk traveling through a war zone.

(438 Recommendations) Why would a commercial airplane fly over the war zone? It is an insanity as the war itself.

(157 Recommendations) Why was a commercial jet flying a route over a war zone? Military planes were being shot out of the sky on an almost daily basis. This flight path was stupid and senseless. First and foremost, the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of the those responsible for directing this plane to fly over eastern Ukraine. Everyone know the chaos of wars claims many innocent victims.

(115 Recommendations) Given the two other aircraft crashes in recent days, why are commercial planes still flying above Eastern Ukrainian airspace at all?

(286 Recommendations) Sad as it is, the downed plane should be an excuse for everyone to call for a truce without losing face, whatever the real cause of tragedy. Putin can use this as an off-ramp to de-escalation of the region’s tension
